Parents’ Questions Answered: Safety, Studies and the Future

When a young person decides to spend a year abroad with Edusport Academy, it is not only their dream. It is also a big decision for the family. Parents naturally have many questions: “Will my child be safe?”, “What about their studies?”, “How will this year help their future?” This article answers those key concerns honestly and clearly.

Safety: who looks after my child?

Safety is always the first priority. From the moment your son or daughter arrives, they are in a structured environment with staff who know what it means to welcome international students. Players live in supervised accommodation, follow clear rules and have adults they can contact at any time if there is a problem.

Life in the city is also part of the safety picture. Glasgow and Malta are used to international students, with good public transport, student‑friendly areas and clear local support services. Young people are not left alone to “figure everything out”; they are guided on how to move around safely, what to avoid, and how to behave responsibly.

Of course, independence grows over the year, but never without support. Parents are encouraged to stay in touch with their child and with the Academy. Regular communication, clear expectations and a strong relationship between family and staff are key to making the experience safe and positive.

Studies: is it just a year of sport?

A common fear is that a year at an academy is “just football or rugby” and that studies will be forgotten. In a serious student‑athlete programme, the opposite is true. Education is a core pillar of the experience, not an afterthought.

Players follow structured courses, often focused on English language or preparation for further studies. They have timetables, attendance requirements and work to complete. Teachers monitor their progress and help them build the academic habits they will need later at university or in professional training.

Learning also happens outside the classroom. Living abroad forces young people to organise their time, manage their responsibilities and communicate in a new language. These skills are part of their education, just as important as any textbook.

The future: how does this year help?

Parents want to know how this year will translate into real opportunities. The benefits are both immediate and long‑term.

In the short term, your child becomes more mature, more independent and more confident. They learn to manage a demanding schedule, balance sport and studies, and adapt to a new culture. They also improve their English and build a network of international friends.

In the long term, this experience stands out on university applications and CVs. Admissions teams and employers recognise the value of a structured year abroad: it shows initiative, courage and the ability to cope with change. Combined with high‑level sport, it signals discipline, resilience and teamwork.

What if my child changes their mind about football or rugby?

Another question parents often ask is: “What if my child realises they do not want to pursue sport at a high level?” In reality, this can be a positive outcome. A year at Edusport is not only about reaching professional sport; it is about helping young people understand themselves better.

If a player decides to focus more on studies or another path, they do so with a strong experience behind them: they have lived abroad, learned a language, and proven that they can handle responsibility. This clarity can save time and avoid years of uncertainty later.

Support and communication with parents

Throughout the year, communication with families remains important. Parents are informed about key moments, and they can reach the Academy to ask questions or discuss their child’s progress. The goal is to work together: the family, the player and the staff, all moving in the same direction.

Sending your child abroad is a brave decision. It is normal to feel both proud and worried. But when the environment is structured, the support is real and the goals are clear, that decision can become one of the best investments you ever make in your child’s future.
