A Gap year
23rd June 2025
The Gap Year: A Project Led by Edusport Academy Since 2011, Now Supported by the State
On June 5, 2025, during her speech in Hanches, Élisabeth Borne, Minister of Education, highlighted a major shift in French education: the recognition of the gap year. This project, which introduces a thoughtful pause in the post-baccalaureate journey, aims to offer young people a unique opportunity to develop their independence, live enriching experiences, and better define their future aspirations.
In her own words: "The transition to post-bac must be a fully chosen one, and represent a moment of emancipation, whatever path the student takes. That is why we will pay particular attention to the gap year. In 2025, only 9,000 baccalaureate graduates submitted a request. This is why a working group will issue recommendations to make it accessible to everyone, and better recognise it, notably in the form of ECTS credits."

A Gap Year — Why?
In a society where choosing a career path can become a source of stress for students, the gap year presents itself as a breath of fresh air. It helps avoid hasty choices or frequent course changes, while encouraging the development of transferable skills.
Edusport Academy: 15 Years of Expertise
in Scotland For nearly 15 years, we have been offering a gap year programme in Scotland, firmly believing that a gap year is not simply a pause, but a true opportunity for transformation. Our programme offers a unique environment, combining sport, personal development, and academic learning to allow young people to:
- Progress in the Scottish championship and discover a different style of play
- Learn English, an essential tool for their future
- Prepare a Sport Management degree or a Bachelor's/Master's level qualification
- Explore a new culture and develop their independence
- Join a community of passionate individuals sharing the same ambitions
Institutional Recognition
For 2026, the government plans to pilot a structured framework for the gap year, including the award of ECTS credits. This means that this pause will not only be encouraged, but also formally recognised within academic pathways — giving the gap year an official status, while placing it at the service of young people's personal and professional development.
