What Life in Glasgow Is Really Like for an Academy Player

More Than Just Sport

When you imagine moving to Glasgow for a year with Edusport Academy, you probably think first about football or rugby. Training, matches, stadiums, maybe even the rain. But your life in Glasgow will be much more than what happens on the pitch. It is a full experience as a student‑athlete in one of Europe’s most vibrant and welcoming cities.

A Student City Open to the World

Glasgow is a real student city. It has universities, colleges and language schools all over the city, and young people from many different countries. That creates an atmosphere that is lively, friendly and used to welcoming international students. As an Edusport player, you are part of this environment: you live, study and move around in the same streets, cafés and transport as thousands of other students.

A Typical Day: Classes First

A typical day in Glasgow as an Edusport player starts with your classes. Depending on your programme, you may have English lessons or other courses in the morning. You travel to class by public transport or on foot, learning quickly how to navigate the city. In the classroom, you work on your language, your studies and your communication skills, surrounded by classmates from different countries.

Afternoons: Time to Train

After classes, your focus shifts to sport. You head to training, where you follow a routine similar to a professional environment: warm‑up, technical work, tactical exercises, small‑sided games, set pieces, sometimes gym sessions. The intensity is high, but the staff guide you and help you adapt. Over time, you get used to this rhythm and you start to feel and think more like a serious athlete.

Evenings: Recovery and Community Life

Evenings are a mix of recovery, social life and personal time. You return to the residence, eat with your teammates, and share the stories of your day. Sometimes you have video analysis or team meetings, sometimes you simply relax, do your laundry, prepare your kit and call your family. Week by week, you become more independent and more organised without even noticing it.

Weekends: Competition and Exploration

The weekends in Glasgow are special. On match days, you experience the routine and emotions of competition: preparation, travel, warm‑up, the match itself, then the analysis of what went well and what must improve. On other days, you might watch professional matches in the city, visit new areas, go shopping in the centre, or explore local cafés and restaurants with your friends.

The Weather: Part of the Adventure

Of course, the weather is not always perfect. Glasgow is famous for its rain and changing skies. But this becomes part of the experience and even part of your story: learning to train and play in all conditions, discovering that a good waterproof jacket is your best friend, and realising that the city still has a warm atmosphere, whatever the temperature.

The People: Warmth and Authenticity

One of the most important aspects of life in Glasgow is the people. The local culture is known for its humour, directness and kindness. At first, the accent can be a challenge, but you adapt quickly. Shop staff, bus drivers, teachers, neighbours – most people are open and helpful when they see you are making an effort. You learn to be confident, to ask for help and to communicate in real situations.

Team Life: Friendships That Last

Inside the Academy, you are never alone. You share your daily life with other players who are living the same adventure. You build strong friendships, not only with teammates from your own country, but also with players from completely different cultures. You celebrate wins together, you support each other after defeats, and you learn to live in a community.

Homesickness: A Normal Part of the Journey

There are also moments of homesickness. Missing your family, your friends, your food, your usual habits is normal. These moments are part of the process of growing up and becoming independent. The positive side is that you have staff, coaches and fellow players around you who understand what you are going through and who can support you.

Glasgow: Your Second Home

Little by little, Glasgow stops being “a city abroad” and starts feeling like a second home. You have your favourite routes, your favourite coffee place, your favourite corner in the gym. You know where to buy what you need, how to move around and how to manage your time. When the end of the year approaches, many players are surprised by how attached they have become to the city and the life they have built there.

An Experience That Changes You

Life in Glasgow as an Edusport Academy player is intense, challenging and full of learning. It demands effort, discipline and courage, but it also gives you memories, friendships and experiences that stay with you forever. You do not just become a better player; you become a more complete person.
